LIS5022 Advanced Designing Database 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
The main purpose of this course is to provide students with knowledge regarding how to develop sound database designs using Entity-Relationship (ER) model. The specific topics to cover include the following: 1) the relational model, 2) the relationships between ER and relational model, 3) normalization process to create sound relational tables, 4) structured query language (SQL), which is an ANSI standard language for data definition and manipulation on the relational DBMS, 5) the relationships between ER-diagramming and relational implementation, 6) advanced data modeling using Universal Modeling Language (UML), and 7) introduction to Topic Maps.

This seminar will discuss the technologies related to intergrating the Web and DBMS in order to create dynamic Web pages.The main focus of the seminar will be on available technology used in designing various search interfaces, effective data entry, updating, and deleting via the web. Each student will be required to complete his or her own Web DB project that has practical uyility. Understanding of HTML and database design is pre-requisite and assumed.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with understanding of social science research methodology and to help students to acquire competency in statistical analysis methods commonly used in the LIS research. Students will learn how to use SAS program to conduct basic statistical analyses and to understand how to interpret SAS output. They will also learn how to relate research designs to statistical analyses and the issues related to evaluating information.

The purpose of this seminar is to investigate what advantages we can achieve by constructing Semantic Web-based systems compared to the current information systems. The concrete topics to be covered in this class are as follows: W3C Resource Description Framework (RDF), RDF Schema, W3C Web Ontology Language (OWL) Lite, OWL DL, OWL Full, and methodology of creating sound ontologies. ISO Topic Map will also be covered in depth in this course.

The goal of the course is to teach how programming languages can be used as a tool to implement and validate research ideas in various information science research.
